NATIONAL CLERGY CONVOCATION
Over the past few years, several regional clergy convocations have been held in the four regional jurisdictions in the country (Mindanao, Visayas, South-Central Luzon and North-Central Luzon). The outcome of these gatherings more than validated the purposes for which clergy convocations have been called for by the Obispado Maximo; and these are: a venue for continuing theological study and reflection, praise and worship, fellowship and recreation.
The convocations had, indeed, enabled the clergy to have a fuller grasp of or a deeper understanding about the institutional programs or the strategic directions of the Church; served as a venue for self-assessment vis-à-vis institutional expectations; and provided a forum to discuss common issues and problems with regard to clergy welfare and well-being.
The clergy, most especially the parish priests, are the closest links of the institutional Church with the faithful. They are exposed to the realities obtaining in the grassroots faith communities, serving as the eyes, ears and, more importantly, the mouthpiece of the institutional Church at the base. The parish priests serve in the frontline in the implementation of policies promulgated by the Church. The parish priest is the go-to guy in most aspects of Church life and has barely ample time for family life and for self development through study, recharging and recreation.
It is for these reasons that a National Clergy Convocation was conceptualized to enable the clergy to recharge their weary bodies, to review and renew their commitment to the mission of the Church, and to keep the flame of camaraderie and fellowship ever burning amongst them. Its general objective is to provide a venue for continuing biblical and theological studies, fellowship and recreation, as well as a forum for dialogue and discussion regarding institutional programs, thrusts and perspectives to all the clergy.
Specifically, it aims to deepen the knowledge and understanding of the clergy about the thrusts and direction of the Church guided by the triennial theme and program call; enable them to engage in a process of self-assessment in relation with their vocation and ordination vows; strengthen their fellowship through sharing and dialogue, worship and recreation; and renew their commitment to serve God and country and to work for the best interest of the Church.
